Centum Verba: Lupus et Rusticus, Compatres

Rusticus duodecim oves habet. 

Volens peregrinari, commendat oves suas lupo, compatri suo.

Lupo dicit,

"Compater, me absente, oves meas custodire debes."

Lupus respondet,

"Oves custodire promitto, compater!"

Gratias lupo agens, rusticus abit.

Lupus, esuriens, cogitat de ovibus.

Una die comedit unam.

Altera die, aliam.

Tertiam.

Quartam, quintam, sextam, septimam, octam, nonam.

Rusticus, reversus, tres oves solas invenit.

Novem desunt.

Lupum interrogat,

"Ubi reliquae sunt?"

Lupus respondet,

"Oves novem mortuae sunt, compater!"

Rusticus dicit,

"Si mortuae sunt, da mihi pelles!"

Lupus ei pelles dat.

Ecce!

Rusticus vestigia lupi dentium videt, et clamat,

"Reus es mortis, lupe!"

Et statim compatrem perfidiosum necat.

Contigit quod quidam paterfamilias habuit duodecim oves. Voluit peregrinari et commendavit oves suas lupo, compatri suo, et compater iuravit quod bene conservaret eas. Profectus est statim. Lupus interim cogitavit de ovibus et uno die comedit de una, altera die de alia, ita quod vix tres invenit paterfamilias quando reversus est. Quaerebat a compatre quid factum fuerit de aliis ovibus. Respondit lupus quod mors ex temporalitate venit super eas. Et dixit paterfamilias, “Da mihi pelles,” et inventa sunt vestigia dentium lupi, et ait paterfamilias, “Reus es mortis,” et fecit lupum suspendi.

A man once owned twelve sheep. He wanted to take a trip, so he entrusted his sheep to a friendly wolf.

"I'll be glad to watch them," said the wolf.

On the first day, the wolf ate one sheep, another the next day, and by the time the man returned, there were only three sheep left.

"What happened to the rest of my sheep?" the man asked.

"They died unexpectedly," said the wolf.

"Show me their skins," said the man, and there he saw the wolf's teeth-marks.

"You are a murderer!" shouted the man, and he had the wolf hanged.
