Venus, the goddess of love (Greek Aphrodite), and Adonis was her lover. Adonis was an avid hunter but Venus feared for his safely; here you can see her trying to prevent him from going hunting. Adonis disregarded Venus's warnings - and during the hunt, he was killed by a wild boar.
