This dramatic painting by Antoine Wiertz shows the Greeks and the Trojans fighting over the body of the slain Patroclus. The Trojan hero has killed Patroclus in combat and stripped off the armor - Achilles' own armor - which Patroclus had worn when he came out to challenge Hector instead of Achilles. The scene is described in Book XVII of Homer's Iliad.
